The Friends of the Commons Volunteers There are two groups of volunteers. One group meets each Wednesday morning at 9.30 am and works for 2 or 3 hours (depending on each volunteer's energy level). The other group meets for 2 or 3 hours on the first Saturday of each month. The work is led by the Head Keeper. Tools and protective clothing are provided. What sort of work is done? The winter is dominated by clearing holly scrub, controlling holly re-growth and ditch clearance. Spring, summer and autumn jobs include weeding and trimming the heather areas, hedge cutting, clearing bramble and bracken and, in August and September, raking the cut grass from the areas of acid grassland. An unremitting task at all times of the year is picking up litter. There is always a variety of jobs to suit each volunteer's skill, capability and inclination.
